Lima is the capital and largest city of Peru founded by Spanish conquistador Francisco Pizarro on January 18, 1535, as La Ciudad de los Reyes, or “The City of Kings”. With a municipal population of 7,605,743 (2007), Lima ranks as the 18th most populous city in the world. The Historic Center of Lima was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1988 due to its importance during the colonial era leaving a testimony to architectural achievement. Jorge Chávez International Airport is located in Callao, 11 kilometers (7 mi) from the Historic Centre of Lima. For security reasons, visitors are recommended to take only those taxis offered by registered companies at the airport arrivals area.
