Although historically Dutch-speaking, Brussels became more and more French-speaking over the 19th and 20th centuries. Today a majority of inhabitants are native French-speakers, but both languages have official status. Brussels serves as capital of the European Union, hosting the major political institutions of the Union. It began to host institutions in 1957, soon becoming the centre of activities as the Commission and Council based their activities in what has become the “European Quarter”. This presence has contributed significantly to the importance of Brussels as an international centre. Brussels is served by Brussels Airport, located in the nearby Flemish municipality of Zaventem.
